So, you’ve checked out the line up. You’re happy with our food and waste policies, and quite fancy the idea of cycling to Cloud Cuckoo Land. You may even be tempted by the prospect of luxury accommodation in an eco-build, with hot solar-powered showers.

All detail aside, the big question burns. What about the toilets?! How smelly are your loos? How clean are the dunnies?!!

Thanks to Andy and Jen at Fernhill, Cloud Cuckoo Land will NOT use portaloos or chemicals in our toilets in 2011.

Instead, our toilets will take advantage of Fernhill’s innovative WET system, recycling human waste into their on-site reed beds. Rather than pumping your poo into landfill or the oceans, Fernhill have established a thriving ecosystem including plants, insects, amphibians and herons. Their system is entirely self sufficient and doesn’t smell, with water from the systems final pool requiring only a UV filter to pass EU regulations for bottled water!

Did we mention these are flushing toilets? That’s right folks, you won’t find a single hand pump or long drop on-site!

Wow, what a system. If we can create new life, without pollution, either directly or from transport, treatment or disposal, as well as comfortably servicing a community of up to 1000 people for an almost indefinite period – doesn’t this kind of begs another question?
